As a photographer and filmer, Darren Rayner works in the trenches just as much as the athletes he captures. This profession takes him into unique places and into harsh elements. His commitment to his craft is worth acknowledgement. Welcome to the 686 family and the GLCR Project Darren.
Where did you grow up? Bangkok, Thailand. Moved to Canada at age 16 and had never seen snow.
How long have you been snowboarding? 16 years.
How long have you been shooting photos/video?
I have been shooting for 10 years now. Started filming my friends skate, mountain bike and snowboard while in university. Check out 'Voleurz Spirit Team' to get an idea of what we were up to...
Are you working on any interesting projects or have any trips coming up?
I’m co-directing the Whistler Backcomb film, its an action packed ski / snowboard flick to be released in the fall, called ‘Magnetic’. This season has been all time - I’ve never seen so much snow in my life!
What are some of your favorite past projects or trips?
I really enjoyed creating full-length action sports films with the ‘Voleurz’ crew for 8 years. It’s incredibly rewarding to spend a full year producing your own content, on your own terms, with your best friends. I will always remember those first films! https://vimeo.com/voleurz
- With my profession it’s imperative to have the best gear. When shooting not only do I need warm, breathable, technical outerwear, but I also need a specific design to facilitate with carrying camera equipment. Pockets are very important! It’s exciting to know that my feedback will go to developing the product at 686. And black…. all black everything so it’s harder for the other cameras to catch me in the trees.
